Ahhhhhh, chocolate. It’s rich, smooth, melts in your mouth, and let’s be honest—can turn a bad day into a tolerable one. But did you know that the way we enjoy chocolate can teach us something about experiencing God?
Just like a fine piece of chocolate, we can experience God with all our senses. He created them, after all! The Bible is filled with imagery that connects our physical experiences to our spiritual ones.
“Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.” – Psalm 119:97
Loving God’s Word isn’t about obligation; it’s about delighting in it, just like we delight in a sweet treat. Let’s break it down by our senses:
• Sight – Before we take a bite of chocolate, we admire it. Whether it’s a perfectly drizzled truffle or a simple chocolate square, we take in its richness with our eyes first. Likewise, we should take time to see God’s beauty—not just in Scripture, but in His creation, His people, and even the small moments of our daily lives. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” – Psalm 19:1. Every sunrise, every flower, every unexpected kindness—it’s all God’s handiwork, waiting to be noticed.
• Smell – The aroma of chocolate is rich and inviting, just like the presence of God when we truly breathe Him in. Have you ever been so overwhelmed by stress that you forgot to just stop and take a deep breath? God’s peace is like that deep breath for our souls. When we pause and acknowledge Him, we invite His presence to calm us and fill us with His love.

• Taste – That first bite of chocolate is everything, right? The smoothness, the sweetness—it’s meant to be savored. God invites us to taste and see that He is good (Psalm 34:8). His Word is not something to be rushed through like a fast-food meal. It’s a feast, meant to be enjoyed slowly, bite by bite. When we take time to really digest Scripture, it nourishes us in ways we don’t even realize.
• Touch – Holding a piece of chocolate, feeling it melt between your fingers, reminds us that God is tangible in our lives. He is near, holding us in His hands, sustaining us with His presence. Sometimes, we don’t feel Him, but that doesn’t mean He’s not there. Just like we trust that chocolate will taste as good as it looks, we can trust that God’s promises are as real as He says they are. “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” – Psalm 145:18
• Sound – You know that little snap when you break a chocolate bar? It’s so satisfying! Just like hearing God’s voice—through Scripture, through worship, through that gentle whisper in our hearts. When we open our Bibles, we’re literally hearing from GodHimself. That should give us chills (in the best way possible). His voice brings life, peace, and direction when we’re lost.
This week, as you enjoy a piece (or five) of chocolate, let it remind you of the richness of time spent with Jesus. He’s sweeter than anything we can taste on earth, and His love satisfies in a way no treat ever could.
So go ahead—savor His presence. And maybe a little chocolate, too. 🍫✨
