Life has a way of throwing us into unexpected storms, doesn’t it? This winter has been a vivid reminder of that—fires raging in California, freezing temperatures sweeping across the U.S., and snow falling in places like Florida and Georgia where it feels almost unheard of. These natural disasters, alongside personal struggles we may face, can leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsteady. But even in the middle of these hard and trying seasons, God offers us the hope and strength to persevere.
The Bible doesn’t shy away from the reality of hardship. In fact, it gives us tools to walk through it and allows these seasons to grow our faith. Let’s explore how we can endure the storms, let them shape us, and find strength through Scripture and God’s promises.
Faith in the Fire: The Story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
When we think of enduring trials, the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego comes to mind. These three men faced a literal fiery furnace for refusing to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden statue (Daniel 3). Can you imagine the fear they must have felt as they stood before the king, knowing their lives were on the line?

But instead of caving to fear, they demonstrated unwavering faith, saying, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (Daniel 3:17-18).
Their trust in God didn’t depend on their circumstances. Even in the face of death, they believed in His power and sovereignty. And God showed up in a miraculous way, protecting them from the flames and walking with them through the fire. This story reminds us that God doesn’t always remove the trials, but He is always present with us in them.
Building Perseverance in Our Storms
Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, we too face fiery trials, though they may look different. It might be the loss of a job, strained relationships, or living through natural disasters. These moments test our faith, but they also provide an opportunity to deepen it.
James 1:2-4 offers encouragement in these seasons: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Our trials are not wasted; they refine us, mature us, and make us more like Christ.
Practical Steps for Persevering Through Hard Seasons
- Anchor Yourself in God’s Word: When the storms rage, let Scripture be your anchor. Psalm 34:17-18 reminds us, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Spend time meditating on God’s promises, and let them fill you with peace.
- Pray Honestly and Persistently: God wants to hear from us, even when our words are filled with questions, tears, or frustration. Bring your struggles to Him, and trust that He is listening and working, even when you don’t see it right away.
- Lean on Community: Just as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood together in faith, we need each other. Reach out to trusted friends, family, or your church community for support and prayer. Walking through trials with others lightens the burden and strengthens our resolve.
- Look for God’s Presence in the Trial: Sometimes, it’s in the hardest moments that we experience God’s presence most powerfully. Like the fourth figure in the furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, God is walking with you, even if you can’t see Him right away.
Hope for the Future
Hard seasons are not the end of the story. Just as winter eventually gives way to spring, our trials are temporary, and God’s purposes are eternal. Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Hold onto this promise as you persevere.
Friends, you are not alone in your struggles. The same God who walked through the fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is with you in your storm. Keep your eyes on Him, let your faith grow through the trial, and trust that He is working all things together for your good.
Closing Encouragement
As you navigate this season—whether it feels like a snowy winter or a raging wildfire—know that God’s love and strength are unchanging. He is with you, shaping you, and preparing you for the blessings ahead. Stay rooted in Him, and let your faith bloom, even in the hardest of times.
Debbie 🙂
